Follicular Unit Extraction Surgery

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is a revolutionary advancement in the way that individual hair follicles are harvested for transplant.

The traditional method involved removing a strip of skin, complete with follicles, from the donor area at the back of the head. When this area was sewn back together it would leave a fine but continuous scar across the back of the patient's scalp. FUE completely eliminates the scalpel and associated scar from hair transplant procedures.

Using advanced FUE methods, the surgeon is able to isolate and extract a single follicle from the donor area at either the back or side of the head and then transplant that follicle into an artistically placed pinhole in the patient's balding or thinning area.

A specially designed tool, only 1mm wide is used to perforate and loosen the skin around the individual hair follicle before extracting the follicle with a pair of precision jeweler's forceps.

Some of the benefits of FUE as opposed to traditional methods include:
  • Less bleeding
  • Less visible scars
  • Less recovery time
  • No scalpels, no sutures

FUE may be used exclusively for an entire procedure, or in conjunction with the standard strip method to increase the overall number of grafts possible per surgery.

Dr. Neil P. Superfon, D.O., Dr. William Ko, M.D., and John A Ebner, D.O. are successful surgeons with experience and aesthetic sense to know where to place each transplanted hair, and at which angle and direction to place them to ensure they grow naturally. This will guarantee a natural, virtually undetectable hairline.

The Follicular Unit...

The most revolutionary aspect of hair transplantation. The follicular unit of the adult human scalp consists of 1-4 terminal (full thickness) hair follicles along with 1-2 fine vellus hairs, sebaceous (oil) glands, a small muscle, tiny nerves and blood vessels, and a fine band of collagen that surrounds the unit. These follicular units insure maximum growth. In order to remove follicular units for transplanting to the front and top of the head, a technique called "single strip harvesting" is used. The donor tissue is removed in one piece so as to not disturb the follicular units. Another essential component of follicular unit transplantation is the use of a "stereomicroscopic dissection" process to avoid damage to the units.

In addition to this, a major advantage to using follicular units is that it allows the surgeon to use small recipient sites. Because they are small, they can be inserted into tiny needle sized sites in the transplant area that heal more quickly. Keeping the wound size to a minimum and at the same time maximizing the amount of hair that can be placed into the site, ultimately gives you the best results.
